Playing cards

This project is an exploration of Indian culture. During many of our festivals, playing cards is a way to celebrate. the face of the cards are decorated with contemporary Indian models while the back of each card is artwork from the lowest caste, the Dalits. I attempted to create a product that was physically appealing to the sensibilities of Indians while providing commentary on our social constructs. The lowest caste is often overlooked and remain anonymous, which is why i decided to represent them by their artwork, and not their faces. The hierarchy that is inherent in a deck of cards is portrayed by stylized models who assume their role in the deck with the support of this under privileged group. This deck of cards serves as a reminder to those who partake in Indian festivities, that their lifestyles are achieved by the sacrifices of an entire caste.
